Values of the Truman Project

The Cornell Social Media Lab promoted the value of actively fighting against online harm in the Truman Project.

The project was created to understand how positive and harmful social norms and behaviors spread on social networks. In their simulations, researchers are able to see misinformation and develop strategies to combat the spread. They also developed mechanisms that help inspire users to stand up for victims of cyberbullying, in other words, be an up-stander.

The Truman Project’s value of combating online harm aligns with two of Digital Humanity’s values: diversity and openness. Digital Humanities encourages more diversity than traditional humanities in the sense of gender, race, bodily abilities, and language. Openness in Digital Humanities encourages inclusivity and collaboration.
