- This page is to identify, evaluate, and discuss the Methodology of Provoke!.
Provoke is a project that shows how people used different sounds and began to study them. The project is created thru the different peoples view on sound and also the way that they would use sound. Each individual project that these select few people worked on shows the difference in natural sounds to even the amplifications of electric sound. The way these people conducted their research is quite interesting and profound, to be apart of and relate to that of digital humanities
Finding Ibrida
The researcher on this project was Kenneth David Stewart. His idea was to modify or create a new and improved type of guitar with new software that he was creating known as Ibrida. This researchers goal was to provide something that could amplify it as well. His first goal was to find the signal processing unit that would help him. So the first thing this researcher did was buy an electric guitar and empty out its electronic software and then install some of his own.
He also had another method of adding in different led lights and mother boards to began to see how he can amplify his guitar and make it better.
Paperphone
In the Paperphone project this researcher wanted to see the effects of sound with different voice effects. One way the researchers would start this out would be through the echo and reverb, which are sound settings that came out of the sounds they were introducing into their project. The paperphone group also figured out that with these different sound effects they could use it best in things such as podcast and videos. The group also found out that this voice and audio method would go very well in the academic setting.
We are your neighbors
The idea of the we are your neighbors project was to aim to create a kind of environment for prisoners at the Richmond City Jail. Now in this work environment this groups motive or goal was to install a recording application in the jail and have the inmates or even non inmates record their own “art”. The way this group did this was simple and easy. The group had created a recording studio known as Sanctuary inside the jail out of different types of audio equipment and even had the prisoners receive music lessons as well from a professor of music named Adrew McGraw even had help from the group as well.
The group of talaneted artists thought that sound was a key idea for the Richmond City Jail inmates because of how free it would make them. They believed that with this idea of sound then we can understand the discipline and surroundings that the group of inmates undergo and witness as they express their thoughts through the recordings in Sanctuary.
Sussurous Scholarship
Sussurous scholarship is a fun and collaborative way that students have created their pieces of work and made them into sound pieces. They figured that with their idea of sonic translation which means translating their written work into audio clips or a digital scholarship would help them out. The work produced from the translation was different. For example one user named Corrina stated that the way she would translate would be from using her zoom camera and also taking YouTube videos and combining it with her own videos to make a translation. In addition it seems that each of these users methods to translating are very different.
The Grand Rue
In the Grand Rue Project we follow behind Myron Beasley and Robert August Peterson. They were collecting different sounds or symphonic melodies from the streets of Port Au Prince in Haiti. They discovered that from their collecting that there were many different sounds that came from the people and the city. Rob used different media software to get his recordings for his and Myron’s vision. He believes that with this type of work you should have a good attitude and should “go for it”.
A Tale of Two Soundscapes
A tale of two soundscapes is almost similar to that of The Grand Rue, as it also deals with using audio clips that details the life of Steph Ceraso, who is moving from Culliwhee North Carolina to Pittsburg Pennsylvania. Her ear for sound is amplified as she introduces us to the sounds that she experienced through her audiovisual tale.
In this audiovisual tale Steph Ceraso uses many different methods in acquiring our ear and taking us on her journey. She at first has a video that shows us where she has been and how she had to cope with the idea traveling and getting accustomed to the idea of livin In a new city. Her ideas also story shows her ideals and also her creativity during this time.
Organs of the Soul
Organs of the Soul details the way people interpreted their sound scape. It guides and shows us the way that music was interpreted in the eighteenth century. Through multiple sources of sound in the eighteenth century we will understand the sound, voice, and musical networks that lead us to our own interpretation of music.
