Food On Instagram

A final project created in DHM 280 during the fall 2017 semester, Food On Instagram tracks when people post pictures of their food on the social media app Instagram. Food On Instagram narrows down images with specific hashtags from the Philadelphia, West Chester and Pottstown regions to complete their data search. The three students Brian Watson, Kayla DiStefano, and Connor Watkins created this project to figure out if location has any influence on the number of posts in a given area. Food On Instagram allows their users to locate popular restaurants and good eats near their home, bypassing other apps that may not show pictures of the dishes like Yelp. The project cuts down added time and helps their users find the best place to eat hassle free. This digital humanities project shares one major and key similarity with our project Real Insta: West Chester. This similarity is that they both receive their data from and focus in on the app Instagram. Both digital humanities projects finds the locations with the highest social impressions on Instagram and charts them on the website. Both apps excel is letting their users have a easy and non time consuming experience in finding the most popular locations. Another similarity is that both projects use three of the same tools, those tools being  Netlytic,  Story Maps, and Food  Recognition Technology. The main difference between Food On Instagram and Real Insta: West Chester is that Food On Instagram takes data from Philadelphia, West Chester and Pottstown while our project only focuses on the West Chester area. By only taking data from West Chester, Real Insta: West Chester is the most complete and correct website in giving their users the correct information about the area. This lets our website be the go to in tourism around West Chester, giving us the edge no one else does. Instmap

Instmap is a tool that projects an interactive map showing you all the cool Instagram posts that are popping up around you. This location feature is useful for highlighting exactly where your friends and peers are hanging out with or without you, giving you the ability to see all of the popular spots in the world. Created by Rulan Tarakanov, a Ukrainian web developer, Instmap opens up the ability for its users to see all photos posted by public profiles in whatever location you insert in the search bar. Below is a picture of Instmap when you search in New York City.

Instmap has many cool features, one being able to find people around you who share your taste in photography, food, or any other subject you search for on Instagram. By using Instmap you can also use the tool to find a new location for your next Instagram photo shoot. This location tool shares a similarity with our project Real Insta: West Chester in that both projects take the most popular public photos on Instagram and insert them in a map. By doing this, both projects find the photos with the most impressions meaning those photos will have the most impact on other people’s thoughts. By tracking these popular photos the users of both websites will be able to find pictures and base their experiences in the selected area around the popular photos they viewed. The main difference between Instmap and Real Insta: West Chester is that Instmap is world wide, not just focusing in on one area.
