Collaboration
In order to be successful in the field of digital humanities one needs to have a set of values. These values include openness, connectedness, experimentation, diversity and lastly, collaboration. The collaboration between the four scholars in this project is truly amazing. The names of these scholars include Shane White, Stephen Garton, Graham White, and Stephen Robertson. All four of these men were or are currently professors at the University of Sydney Australia. These professors not only collaborated with one another but outside sources as well. Sources like The Heurist knowledge management system, who’s purpose is to make sites like this one more user friendly. They did their own updates to the site and even put out a guide on how to use it. Collaboration has been vital every step of the way throughout this project. The extensive research including around three thousand case files wasn’t easy to sort through. These professors collaborated with Arts eResearch to link the interactive map to Google Maps which is one of the main focal points of the sight. The maps itself is a valuable piece of the researchers collaboration being demonstrated right on the sight. Because so many knowledgable researchers contributed to the creation of this project they were able to make to map be the source of the message. They brought young Harlem to life and told its story through real accounts, with the information to back them up. Without the vast use of collaboration throughout the journey of this project it would be impossible for all of the information to be display in such a user friendly fashion. Values in the humanities are pivotal and this team executed it quite well.
“We were only able to gather the quantity of material we did because four scholars collaborated on this research over a period of several years.”
