This project site was created in the fall of 2020 by Team Monke of West Chester University.
The goal of our project review is to utilize the WordPress platform in a way that clearly outlines and evaluates the values of the digital humanities found in the Digital Harlem mapping project, including diversity, collegiality, collaboration, experimentation, and openness– each a vital characteristic of the digital humanities as discussed by Lisa Spiro‘s piece, “This is Why We Fight.”
We chose Digital Harlem because of the immediate impact it had; the creators of the site implemented so much more than the mapping project itself. Lists of data sources, exterior influences, personal opinions, and extensive lists of colleagues and assistants were posted and linked all over the site, and it was clear that collaboration and collegiality were substantial contributors to the project overall.
Team Monke itself dove into these core values throughout the project building process: collaboration was key when choosing a project, theme. team name, and several small components of this website. Without collegiality, divvying up the pages, peer reviewing each other’s work, and moving past major roadblocks would have been abysmal, and experimentation drove us to play around with design and content ideas, and fueled our drive to create something unique. Through breaking down and analyzing one team’s venture in the digital world, our team of diverse majors was learning to apply the very values we searched for to our own collaborative enterprise.
