What's on the Menu?

Values

Diversity

What’s on the Menu? collects and transcribes menus from across the world. Culture is a world-wide phenomenon, and this project captures diversity through its multi-cultural culinary database. From large-scale American chain restaurants to local first-generation diners, the over 17,000 menus capture the culture of the original establishment through their dishes and descriptions. Menus both printed and handwritten from the 1800s to today show the economic and stylistic diversity accepted and transcribed in the project’s database.

A menu that used a digital font for its dishes.

Experimentation

This project is the NYPL‘s first public application programming interface (API) project. This public API allows other groups and organizations to reuse the programming and coding from the What’s on the Menu? project to build other projects and databases. The NYPL is expanding its reach and experimenting in hosting publicly available tools that open up the possibilities for others to build projects and databases in the future beyond their original project.
