Digital Project

Villa La Pietra

About the Project

The project, “Historic Fractures: Toward a Digital Future in Museum Accessibility” is combined effort between the students and faculty of NYU’s Computer Science and Museum Studies department to make Villa La Pietra’s exhibits more accessible to people with disabilities. The historic building is beautiful and one that retains its original integrity, but due to that it becomes heavily inaccessible to a variety of people that come to its doors.

Accessibility

The team’s goal was to develop and publish three digital modules created to help a wide variety of disabilities. The three modules were: an augmented reality platform that creates a guided tour for visitors with physical disabilities who may be unable to access certain parts of the building, a database of signatures that would trace connected histories of early 20th century visitors, and a selected amount of tactile objects from the museum’s collection for low-impaired vision or blind visitors to touch.
