The project follows many Digital Humanities best practices. It uses a digital platform (Scalar) to organize and present cultural analysis in an accessible way. It also clearly connects its content to meaningful themes like race, power, and identity.

Strengths

  • Clear creative goal
    • Analyzing Jay Z’s music and proving it can be used as a academic topic
  • Purpose and audience
    • Aimed at students and professors interested in hip hop and culture
  • Good communication of data
    • Visualizations and text
  • Good use of data to support analysis

Weaknesses

  • Doesn’t explain how data is collected
    • Methods not very well explained
    • No data set included
  • Weak documentation
    • Doesn’t document methods or workflow
  • Limited information of collaborators
    • Doesn’t include much information about collaborators
Overall, the project is a strong example of Digital Humanities work because it combines culture, analysis, and digital tools in an organized way.
