The What America Ate project is a digital archive and interactive website that brings together scattered documents from the 1930s “America Eats” initiative, along with community cookbooks and food advertising sources. The project explores American food history during the Great Depression. It is based at Michigan State University, led by Helen Zoe Veit along with MSU Libraries and the Matrix digital humanities center. The original “America Eats” project was conceived in the late 1930s under the Federal Writers’ Project, but the book it intended to produce was never published. Materials are now made accessible through What America Ate.
