Introduction

My name is Amelia Woytovich, and this is Project 2 for DHM280. For this project, I’m diving into Selfiecity, a digital humanities project that I think really shows what’s possible when art, culture, and data all come together.

Selfiecity looks at how people all over the world take and share selfies on Instagram. It was created by Lev Manovich and his team at the Cultural Analytics Lab in New York. The project mixes data science, art history, and cultural studies to analyze thousands of selfies and find patterns in how we express identity and self image online.

I chose this project because it connects digital tools with everyday culture in such an interesting way. By studying something as simple as a selfie, Selfiecity reveals bigger stories about how we use technology to show who we are and how we want to be seen.
