Social Media Data Stewardship<\/a> is a five-year research project funded in part by the Canada Research Chairs<\/a>, Ted Rogers School of Management<\/a>, and Ryerson University<\/a>. This project focuses on researching the practice and effects of data stewardship and social media. Lead by Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd<\/a> of Ryerson University\u2019s Social Media Lab<\/a>, Social Media Data Stewardship works with studying and developing the practice and attitudes behind the stewardship of social media data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media is a rapidly expanding field that can act as a wide-scale resource of behavioral data that shows how people communicate and interact online. As one of the first projects to cover the concept of social media data stewardship, this project focuses on establishing proper data management processes to assist in current and future research studies as well as provide a comprehensive method of collecting and analyzing the behavioral data from social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project aims to focus on the generally overlooked data management process of data stewardship<\/a>. Data stewardship here is the process of collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, publishing, reusing, disposal, and preservation of data. The goal of data stewardship is to allow for the discovery and retrieval, quality maintenance, adding of value, and reuse of data to assist in the study, research, and accessibility of it over time. Data stewardship builds on data curation by allowing preservation and long-term data management. Social media data stewardship is the result of combing data stewardship and social media data. The goal of this is to assist data producers as well as data consumers in the research, collect, and analyze data for insight on its use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To study data stewardship, the team at Social Media Lab started a five-year research initiative to study the present and future developments of digital research infrastructure. In particular, the team focused on three key aspects of social media data stewardship: data consumers, defined as researchers and decision-makers; data producers, the users of social media; and data intermediaries, as the platform that acts as a media such as Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project aims to establish and promote the foundational research and methods for the idea of social media data stewardship. By collecting and storing data in this established method, the project establishes a method of organizing this data in a preserved researched medium. By having access and method to this stored data, the proposed methods will allow for better online behavioral research byways of easier analysis, republishing, and reuse of social media behavioral data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
