Critics of project<\/h1>\n

“Provoke!” A Digital Sounds Studies<\/a>, is a digital humanities project that encompasses sound studies and the audio arts. The project is built around their website that features all of the seven projects. One of the critics for this project is that the usability of the site is off putting at first and rather confusing to navigate. When your project is solely based around the accessibility of the website and how well it functions, it is imperative that it is easy to use and understand. While the site is rather complicated it is aesthetically pleasing to use and interact with, the landing page uses a minimalist approach so the user can see all the projects and access them easily. Each of the different projects have their own separate pages where you can listen to the audio used for the project while following the drop down sections for more information on the project.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Provoke!’s website design is very much built using a portrait orientation, which is nice for the minimalist design but it creates a lot of scrolling and having to follow text downward. The decision for this orientation leaves large amounts of negative space in the margins to the sides of the text, which some can find unflattering. While this orientation looks great on mobile devices like smartphones, this kind of installation on things such as computers, the orientation does not work in their favor. Another critic of the site is that it is completely lacking a menu on either the top or the side of the page forcing you to go back to the homepage to navigate the rest of the site. A final criticism of this project is that there just is not very much information on the project. Besides the one about page and the pages on the projects, that is all the information they provide for the project. Granted the pages for the individual projects have a rather decent amount of information, the site as a whole is lacking information on things such as sound studies, why such a project was made, etc. Besides the issues of\u00a0 a slightly interface, not having a menu and the lack of information, it is a rather impressive installation. The site for Provoke manages to present all of their projects or “provocations” in a beautiful way and has succeeded in incorporating lots of high quality media into each of the individual project pages. The information it does present is organized well and portrays the information in effective ways. This project helps draw anyone in and introduce the world of sound studies to all kinds of audiences.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h1>\n

In conclusion, Provoke! is a very good example of a digital humanities project. Studying sound is not only hard, but it also takes up such a small portion of academic studies. The creators of this project were able to collect data and present it to anyone who wants to hear it while having visual support from the website and its designated pages. Each page provides incite into the world of sound studies and the digital humanities, and while one page does just that, having them in sync helps the world fall into the world of digital humanities and the study of sound.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
