Coauthor Stephen Robertson mentions that, through the use of Wikipedia, digital historians are the individuals that are targeted with this project.

“What my experience adds to that discussion is an example of why such engagement is more meaningful to digital historians than to other scholars, and hence something not to be left to students.”
Stephen Robertson

Prior to discovering the intended audience through the Digital Harlem blog it appeared that the audience was geared towards individuals that are looking to gain insight on black history to expand their understanding of what life was like for African Americans in Harlem at certain points in time. Along with that those that are interested in the progression and history of New York, or Harlem specifically, may also be interested with this project, as the events from parades and weddings to certain types of crime may help paint a picture of what life was like during the time period of 1915-1930.

This map and description helps visualize what it was like for African Americans to socialize between 1915-1930.

Peers

There are several projects that share similarities with Digital Harlem and its goals of sharing history from a certain time period. All of which have information formatted differently but still share the end goal of relaying history to its viewers.

OldNYC is a project that uses similar mapping technology as Digital Harlem to display historical photos that were taken in very specific locations in New York at certain periods in time. Both projects share the goal of informing what New York history was like with the difference being one through pictures and the other through data driven events.

Mapping Inequality proves to be another project of mapping history and displaying it to its viewers. They do so by using data to determine how Home Owner loans were distributed to shape many communities across America to allow or prevent certain races from living in certain areas. They use mapping technology similarly to Digital Harlem to show areas in the U.S that are more and less likely to experience this type of inequality.

The target audience that the Digital Harlem project was aiming for was not clear and concise on their website.
