Along with people who have desire to learn more about what they hear, individuals who aim to pursue a career in music production, and song writing could benefit from researching this project as well as potential artists as mentioned above.

Peers

Thompson and Daniels proved to not be the only ones questioning the degree of similarity with hit songs over the years. There were several projects that tested similar theories all of which had similarities and differences compared to this project.

One of which was, “What Makes a Number One Hit,” by Noah Askin and Michael Mauskapf, which also tested how number one hits sounded in comparison to others. The study also used the same data collection method, that being The Echo nest, as well as using The Billboard Hot 100. What was most interesting with this project came down to the differences and the results, which in addition to the eight data points used in “The Muscial Diversity of Pop Songs,” Askin and Masukapf incorporated Key, Mode, Tempo, and Time signature as well. When it came to the results Askin and Masukapf did agree that hit songs were similar to each other within The Billboard hot 100 but when it came to the number one song they found that being a bit different compared to the others is what allowed those hits to reach the top. So, although in general the songs on the Billboard list were similar, the ones capable of hitting number 1 were seen as less typical as the others, which is shown in the graphs below.

An article that shares similar predictions as that of Thompson and Daniels was, “Pop Music too loud and All Sounds the Same,” by the Reuters. This article explained a project in which a team led by artificial intelligence specialist, Joan Serra, determined that over the course of 1955 to 2010 pop music has become,”intrinsically louder and more bland,” though Thompson and Daniels project did not necessarily measure loudness of their songs. Joan Serra told Reuters, “In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations-roughly speaking chords plus melodies- has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.” The two projects did not measure all of the same data points but were able to form similar conclusions implying that hit pop songs is becoming more and more alike.

The projects that support each other, though different in some ways, are able to form like conclusions. This further supports that top hits are leaning towards homogeneity.

Joan Serrà, Researcher at Dolby Laboratories

Audience Throughout the project there is information given about the process and the content that goes into questioning if music has become less diverse, but there was no real directContinue readingAudience & Peers

["post-2","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
