The goal was to see what social media could show about people’s lives during times of political protest. While the revolution took place in Ukraine, the team for this project was able to use available online data to do the project in New York City, USA. In total the team analyzed 13,208 images from Instagram in order to complete the project.

What made Euromaidan the perfect revolution to study was that social media had a big hand in helping to organize the protests as well as documenting them. After the Ukrainian government refused to join the EU in 2014 the people of Ukraine took to the streets of Kiev and refused to leave until a “constitutional reform” took place. The movement as a whole was nicknamed Euromaidan as the protests took place in Kiev’s main city square known as Maidan Nezalezhnosti. While the movement technically started in November of 2013, “The Everyday Project” documents the last six days of the protest from the 17th to the 22nd of February, 2014.

Section of the “Flow” from The Everyday Project

The team started the project by downloading all available images shared in central Kiev (where the protests took place) starting in late January 2014. However, as they were downloading the images in real time it became apparent that certain patterns were emerging throughout the photos such as “image content, colors, and compositions”.

In order to make the process of looking at images in real time easier, team member Jay Chow created a program that allowed the team to see the most recent 500 photos from any given location to help zoom in to see the smaller details in the bigger picture.

After lining up all the images next to each other in sequential order to create what the project calls “Flow”, some of one of the patterns that became apparent included “waves” of shifting dark and light color throughout the images that marked the passage of time with daylight and darkness. However, they also discovered more about how the everyday actions of citizens fit alongside the photos of protest and calls for change. They found that both “leak” into the other meaning that no matter how the photos were separated by data (by hashtag, location, or even aesthetics) there were always example of protest amongst day to day life and normal everyday activities alongside fights for change.

“The Everyday Project” completed by Dr. Lev Manovich, Dr. Mehrdad Yazdani, Alise Tifentale, and Jay Chow in 2014, “The Everyday Project” presents a visual look into the movement by collecting and organizing all Instagram posts that were shared by people in Kiev, Ukraine during the Euromaidan revolution in 2014.
