They aimed to provide wide, free and easy access to Whitmans works and biographies to everyone around the world. Accessibility is a goal that aligns with both literature and digital humanities because both focus on expanding access about the informative works. Before the digital era, while there were libraries which also provided free access to literature, the available copies were limited and there are geographical constraints. However, digital tools made it possible for people to access literature at anytime, and anywhere around the world, without restrictions on the amount of available resources for the most part. Therefore, accessibility is a goal that both literature and digital humanities share and the both disciplines work together to successfully accomplish the goal.

This is a 36-second wax cylinder recording of what is thought to be Whitman’s voice reading four lines from the poem “America.” For more information on this recording, see Ed Folsom, “The Whitman Recording,” Walt Whitman Quarterly Review, 9 (Spring 1992), 214-16.

Listen to “America”

ACCESIBILITY One of the main goal of the Walt Whitman archive is accessibility.
