Computer science focuses on creating and improving computational technologies, while Digital Humanities uses those technologies to study subjects such as history, culture, literature, art and human society. Since Digital Humanities relies on digital tools, many of the technologies created by Computer Science can, and are used in Digital Humanities, projects, research and study. Video games are a perfect example of a blend between the two as they are both technical systems and artistic and sometimes culturally significant pieces of media.

Creating a video game involves computer science. Programming, algorithms, physics and graphic are all building blocks that come together to create each and every one of the games we know and love. Every player movement, combat system, non playable character, and in game world is backed by layers of programming and algorithms written by Computer Scientists allowing the game to function and play.

Despite all of the technical requirements, almost every piece of a video game can be studies through the humanities. Video games are a digital artifact the combine technology with artistic expression. Artistic expression exists in almost every video game, from player models, soundtracks and sound effects, to the look and feel of the world around them. Video game’s history, storytelling, characters and themes can also be analyzed through the humanities. Digital Humanities experts would use digital tools to study and analyze these artistic and cultural elements.

A video game contains visual art, music, writing, storytelling, character design and world building while also relying on programming and technology to run. None of the previously mentioned humanities elements in games exist independently from the technology used to produce and deliver the game to a playable form. Programming, graphics technology and game engines are all Computer Science concepts the are necessary for the creation of video games that also allow these artistic elements to be expressed into an interactive experience for the player.

While Computer Science and Digital Humanities may seem like to very different fields, they both have many areas in which they overlap.
