By meticulously gathering data from various government reports and visualizing it through interactive maps, the project provides educators and students with a clear view of how urban renewal policies led to the displacement and marginalization of entire communities. Enabling educators to discuss urban renewal with a nuanced, evidence-based approach, encouraging new perspectives on policies that historically promoted inequality.

For cities, the project highlights the long-term impact of urban renewal on community structure, economic development, and social equity, fostering a better understanding of how current policies might be shaped to avoid repeating past mistakes. On a global scale, it sets an example for other regions facing urban development challenges, showing the importance of incorporating historical and social justice perspectives into urban planning to support more inclusive policies. The project emphasizes the value of transparency and education in driving change and potentially influencing future urban development in a more equitable direction.

Digital Scholarship Lab, “Renewing Inequality,” American Panorama
, ed.
