The Walt Whitman Archive aims to make the audience freely accessible by bringing together manuscripts, letters, notebooks, and multiple editions that are scattered across libraries around the world so that students, teachers, independent researchers, and general readers can study materials that were once limited to scholars<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1st Goal:<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

One major goal of the Walt Whitman Archive is to bring together Whitman materials that are scattered across many libraries and archives worldwide. These materials include manuscripts, letters, notebooks, and early editions that would otherwise remain separated by geography, ownership, and institutional access<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This goal primarily benefits scholars and literary historians who need centeralized, reliable access to primary sources for research. It also supports graduate students and academic researchers who rely on comprehensive collections to conduct textual, historical, or editorial analysis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Project Practices This Goal:<\/strong> The Archive digitizes materials from multiple institutions and unifies them into a single searchable platform. By doing this, it eliminates the need for researchers to travel to multiple archives or request special permissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assessment of Best Practices: <\/strong>This goal reflects strong DH best practices in collaboration, interoperability, and shared digital collections. Another key goal of the Walt Whitman Archive is to create accurate, authoritative digital editions of Whitman’s writings, especially texts like Leaves of Grass<\/em>, which exist in multiple significantly different versions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This goal primarily serves students, teachers, and general readers who need stable, trustworthy editions for learning, teaching, and reading. It also benefits scholars who require clearly documented editorial decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Project Practices This Goal: <\/strong>The Archive uses TEI-XML encoding to represent Whitman’s revisions, structure, and textual features with scholarly precision. Editorial policies are published openly, and each edition is carefully documented to show how it was constructed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
