Digital Projects

Digital projects that are relevant to history will be online databases. These databases will allow for historical research to be brought into your home through your laptop. Two specific projects are The American Yawp, and DALME.

The DALME project is a digital history that aims at analyzing written and drawn data from the medieval and early time periods. They focus on records that came from the daily life of the people. They observe households, shops, and estates from the 14th to 18th centuries.

The DALME project asks a few questions of the medieval time period. What can the written and drawn culture reveal about social and cultural life during this period?

DALME

DALME has read through these resources, and made them digitally available. They want people to have an understanding of this history and they provide it digitally.

DALME project team:

DALME describes themselves as

“a collaborative, cross-disciplinary project that seeks to increase our understanding of Europe’s material horizons during the later Middle Ages, an era when changing patterns of production and consumption altered the material world and transformed the relationship between people and things”

THE AMERICAN YAWP

“A Massively Collaborative Open U.S. History Textbook”

The American Yawp

Is a completely free online American history textbook. Users can use the information however they would like: it meets all the standards of a “free cultural work.” The American Yawp covers many contexts and perspectives of history.

They describe their purpose in the quote on the right:

“We have produced The American Yawp to help guide students in their encounter with American history. The American Yawp is a collaboratively built, open American history textbook designed for general readers and college-level history courses. Over three hundred academic historians—scholars and experienced college-level instructors—have come together and freely volunteered their expertise to help democratize the American past for twenty-first century readers.”

The American Yawp was started in 2015, and is still being updated today. It is produced by Stanford University Press and has an extensive list of contributors. They have editors, editorial advisors, digital content advisors, managing editors, chapter editors, and media curators. The two primary editors / creators are Joseph Locke and Ben Wright. Locke is a professor at the University of North Texas, Wright is a professor at University of Texas at Dallas.
